Settled in 1641 and incorporated in 1799, Burlington, for most of its history, was an agricultural town. Changes with the building of Route 128 turned the town into the fastest growing town between 1955 and 1965. The population tripled between the 1950 and 1960 censuses. Today, the town is a suburban industrial town with a large shopping mall as the center of much of the commercial area.

Burlington is also home to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (Formerly Lahey Clinic) which houses a very busy level II emergency room department.
